Best Medium Sized Festival (UK Festival Awards 2005 & 2006)

The second wave of brilliant line up announcements hits Bestival shores as we shout out loud that the Gossip are now confirmed to join the most exciting festival of the summer.  The hottest band of the last year will warm things up very nicely on the Friday when they play before our headliners The Chemical Brothers.

Portland Oregon's the Gossip are undeniably the world's hottest band at the moment. Fronted by the controversy-courting Beth Ditto, the band's high-octane blend of sinewy punk riffs and potent, Gospel tinged vocals has propelled them to the top of the musical tree.  Ditto's staunch non-conformist stance gained her the top spot in NME's annual Cool List, which she followed up with second place, bowing only to Kate Moss, in the tome's Sexiest Woman category, at the recent NME Awards.  Their universally acclaimed third album 'Standing In The Way Of Control' whose title track was written by Ditto as a response to her government's decision to deny gays the right to marriage in the U.S. has seen the band living up to the hype and cementing their status as bona fide rock-n-roll icons.  Their new single 'Listen Up' is out on 21st May.

Festival curator, Rob da Bank has lit the fuse for Bestival this year and it's about to explode into a better than ever Bestival! How can that be possible we hear you say!  Well, how's this for starters….We've only bloody gone and got Soul II Soul.  Can't wait to see that happy face, hear that thumpin' bass for a lovin' place.

"The Gossip have made quite a few of my favourite records of the last year and their leader Beth Ditto is gonna whip our crowd into shape big time! Soul II Soul on the other hand have made quite a few of my favourite records ever and I'm well pleased to have tempted them to do a rare full live show on the Saturday night." Rob da Bank

Plus Marlena Shaw, the legendary Blue Note soul singer is flying in to belt out her amazing "California Soul" and other classics as sampled by St Germain and Blueboy on "Remember Me".  We can't wait for that one.

The amazing Bat For Lashes is back for her second Bestival performance. Since last year's performance her star has certainly been on the rise.  Her dramatic music creates an intimate, cinematic world, reminiscent of the nocturnal wanderings of Kate Bush and the heartfelt prayers of Cat Power. The perfect soundtrack for the magical quirkiness of Bestival.

Also flying the flag for the female solo singers is the beautiful Deltasonic signing, Candie Payne.  Her sweet girl meets boy kitchen pop songs recall late sixties British cinema or a Smiths single sleeve.  It's pop music on the surface, in the sense that it's catchy. But there is an underlying eeriness and even loneliness to her songs.  We love Candie Payne here at Bestival HQ.

Talking of acts we love, Tunng are back for their second year at Bestival playing their mesmerising mix of folky acoustics and busy electronica overlaid by gorgeous harmonies, bewitching mantras and synthetic beats that are reminiscent of early Beta Band, 'The Wicker Man' soundtrack and Four Tet. Plus we've got some great rock n roll and indie additions in the form of Noisettes, Electrelane (fresh from supporting Arcade Fire), Figurines, Foals and The Kissaway Trail, watch out for these bands they're hot.  In addition we have Simple Kid who's been dubbed as the Irish Beck. He's known for his catchy melodies, lo-fi country / hip-hop / 60s pop crossover sound and his deliberately "simple" approach to making and performing his music. Another one on Rob's 'gonna be big' list is also Robyn the Swedish pop princess has joined the bill.

Legendary electronic pioneer John Foxx, the founding member/vocalist of Ultravox, and a huge influence on Klaxons, The Killers, CSS, Gary Numan and Ladytron amongst others, will be performing two spellbinding audio-visual sets, one being 'Cathedral Oceans' which he has only ever played in European churches and cathedrals previously.  He's also planning to play his seminal 1980 'Metamatic' album live in full at Bestival for the first time.

Also on the bill we have the future of hip-hop and dubstep in Plastic Little, Man Like Me, Shychild, Kode 9 and Spaceape.  While on the other side of the spectrum there are three of the best story telling bands about in the form of Seasick Steve, Son Of Dave and Sunday Best signing, The Hat.

Plus Bristol party animals Babyhead show us what they're made of.  In addition there's Infinite Scale, Johnny Flynn & The Sussex Wit, the brilliant Kitty Daisy & Lewis are back for their third year along with Max Sedgley, Natty, Sportsday Megaphone and The Bobby McGees.  Plus Justin Robertson's new band Thee Earls will take to the stage.

Phew, and if that lots not enough we have some more amazing DJ's to announce, including Detroit techno pioneer and one of the greatest DJ's and producers ever - Carl Craig please stand up; James Lavelle is joining us for the first time; Mr Scruff mashing it up in his second Bestival appearance; Radio 1's Annie Mac and dub pioneer Jah Shaka destroying the bassbins and Jose Padilla playing his famous sunset set, on the Sunday!  And still there's more to announce!

Bestival is of course not just about the music, it's the whole shebang.  We've created the perfect place to indulge yourself in three days of wonder.  A place to meet like-minded folk, munch fantastic foodstuffs and experience the best three days of your life – its also the hottest ticket on the planet so don't stay in bed, get that golden nugget and sail your way to the Solent and join in the fun!
